This classic Indian dish is a staple for babies due to its easy digestibility and high nutritional value. It’s a simple combination of rice and lentils, which can be customized with vegetables for added flavor and nutrients.
Ingredients:
- 1/4 cup basmati rice
- 1/4 cup moong dal (washed and rinsed)
- 1 cup water or vegetable broth
- 1 teaspoon ghee (clarified butter)
- Pinch of turmeric powder
Instructions:
- Rinse the rice and moong dal together.
- In a saucepan, combine the rice, dal, water or broth, ghee, and turmeric powder.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 20-25 minutes, or until the rice and dal are cooked through and the mixture has a porridge-like consistency.
- Mash the cooked khichdi to a smooth consistency for newborns. For older babies, you can leave it slightly chunky.
